About Khumjung / Khunde Valley
Khumjung and Khunde villages are located in the Khumbu Pasang lhamu Rural Municipality of Solukhumbu District in Province No. 1 of northeastern Nepal. These villages are nestled within the Khumbu sub-region, situated inside the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity.
At an elevation of 3,790 meters above sea level, Khumjung village offers panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including the majestic Khumbu Yül-Lha, which holds significant cultural and spiritual importance for the Sherpa community. Similarly, Khunde village, located at an elevation of 3,840 meters above sea level, provides a stunning backdrop of mountain vistas and traditional Sherpa settlements.
Both Khumjung and Khunde villages are recognized for their Sherpa heritage and are often referred to as twin villages due to their close proximity and shared cultural practices. One of the distinctive features of these villages is the green-painted roofs adorning their traditional houses, adding to the picturesque charm of the area.
In addition to their natural beauty, these villages have also gained recognition for their significant contributions to education and healthcare in the region. Khunde village is home to a hospital founded by the renowned mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary in 1966, which serves not only the local residents but also visitors and climbers in the Everest region. This hospital plays a crucial role in providing medical services to approximately 8,000 residents from Khunde, Khumjung, and neighboring areas.
Furthermore, Khumjung village is known for hosting the Khumjung Edmund Hillary School, established by the Himalayan Trust in 1961. This school serves as an educational hub for both Khumjung and Khunde villages, providing quality education to the younger generation and contributing to the preservation of local culture and traditions.
Despite facing challenges such as rural depopulation due to migration to urban areas for better opportunities, the resilient communities of Khumjung and Khunde continue to uphold their rich heritage. Volunteers play a vital role in supporting these villages by teaching in schools, engaging with the community, and contributing to the preservation of Sherpa culture. By participating in volunteer programs in these remote areas, individuals not only provide valuable services but also experience the unique cultural heritage and natural beauty that define Khumjung and Khunde villages.
